Interview: Mystery Gigs with Jofful Gig Discovery

Interview by Maya Hollick

In an era where streaming algorithms dictate our listening habits and ticket prices for stadium tours reach eye-watering heights, the thrill of organic music discovery can feel like a relic of the past.

Enter Jofful Gig Discovery, a fresh grassroots initiative taking a gamble on the element of surprise. By hosting "mystery gigs" with completely unannounced lineups, the project invites music fans to take a chance on the unknown, and dive headfirst into their local scenes.

We caught up with the mind behind the concept following their first event to chat about algorithm fatigue, taking risks, and the power of local live music.

MH: Now that the first show is under your belt, what were your key takeaways from event number one?

It's a concept that works. Not only for the fans who get to discover great new music, but for the bands and organisers who want to put on amazing events! Riotweekend were so grateful for the few extra bodies I got into the room. It means a lot to everyone involved.

MH: Taking a chance on an unannounced lineup requires a lot of trust. How do you pitch the concept to concert goers who are used to knowing exactly who they’re paying to see?

It's not a hugely foreign concept to be honest. A lot of people wonder around festivals listening to whatever comes their way. I love that, why not get that feeling from a gig? I'm working with grassroots bands so the tickets aren't expensive and it's a great way to support your local scene.

Why do you think there is a market for mystery gigs?

I think more and more people are looking to "break free" from the digital world a bit. I can't be the only one fed up of being spoon-fed music by various algorithms. Take a chance, you might find your next favourite band!

Not only that, but people seem to love spending their money on mystery boxes and trading cards; giving away control and chasing a high. Why not do it with live music?

MH: Where does your love and appreciation for live music stem from? What brought you to creating “mystery gigs” as a concept?

Honestly, no idea. I wasn't really "into music" when I was in school. It wasn't until I was at uni and spending long hours doing coursework etc. that I really got into it. I guess I have Spotify to thank for that (sorry!). It's a blessing and curse - Spotify allows you to hear so much music but now it seems to just push the same old big names. That's why I wanted to try something different. A new way of finding bands based on how people did it before streaming took over.

If you're ready to embrace the unknown and experience something different, Jofful Gig Discovery is collaborating on a Rock x Metal 2-Dayer in London on 3rd - 4th October. Weekend passes are available now for £30.60, offering a full weekend of heavy music and total surprise.
